The Pont d’Arc is a famous site of the Ardèche, offering access to the Gorges de l'Ardèche. This natural arch, hollowed out for thousands of years by the river, is impressive for its exceptional dimensions. It rises for more than 30 metres, forming a bridge over the Ardèche river. At its foot sets one of the most visited beaches of the Ardèche, and sailing under the bridge by canoe is always a pleasure. Located near the village of Vallon Pont d'Arc, the arch and the Chauvet cave offer a great tourist site you may not miss to visit during your camping stay in the Ardèche. The Chauvet cave was discovered in 1994. This cave was closed for nearly 20.000 years, after a rock slide. It holds the most ancient and exceptionally preserved mural paintings known today (more than 30.000 yars). More than 1000 anthropomorphic-like and animal mural paintings have been listed on the walls of this cave, making it one of the most important prehistorical sites of the world. To preserve this unique but fragile heritage, a reconstitution of this cave was created, called the Caverne du Pont d'Arc. This facsimile will take you to the heart of the cave and the associated museum will unveil all the secrets of prehistory and the life of our ancestors.
