Amiens lies back from the shores of the Channel and the vast sandy beaches of Picardy. Whether you stay in a campsite in Picardy or in a campsite on the Channel, be sure to explore this small city where stands the highest cathedral in France.
Notre-Dame cathedral, around which is organized around the center of Amiens, is an impressive religious construction. Twice as large as Notre-Dame de Paris, it was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. The construction of this cathedral began in 1220. The structural work was completed in record time, in less than 50 years. The speed at which the cathedral was built explains its architectural unity. The facade, like lace stone, is a pure masterpiece of Gothic art. Its interior has nothing to envy to the facade. You will be impressed by the size of the nave (54 m long and 42.5 m high) filled with light. During the summer, light and sound show are are held at night. They tell the story of the cathedral with projected colors on its facade. A free show that deserves to be seen.
The cathedral is not the sole interest of Amiens. The city has indeed a beautiful historic city but also a medieval quarter (the Saint-Leu area) where used to be produced fabrics. Its streets are lined with colorful half-timbered houses.
Enjoy your stay at a campsite on the shores of the Channel, the Bay of Somme, Nord Pas de Calais or Picardy to go to Amiens.
