|
At 24 km north - east of Nîmes stands the Pont du Gard. This impressive bridge is one of the wonders of antiquity. Built in the first century, it is still standing, surrounded by hills covered with Mediterranean vegetation. A few minutes from your campsite in Languedoc - Roussillon, be sure to go and discover the treasure bequeathed by the Romans.
Made of three levels of arcades, this bridge is higher than 40 meters. It was part of the water system 50 km long which was used to supply Nîmes with water. The aqueduct took water close to Uzes and transported it to Nimes. It brought nearly 20,000 m3 of water to the city of Gard with a slope of 34 centimeters per kilometer. To step over the waters of the Gardon, the aqueduct used the Pont du Gard.
Today, a visit to the Pont du Gard can be complemented by a visit of Potal, a building that offers an e exposure on deck and on Roman life. A fascinating tour for those staying in campsite in Languedoc - Roussillon.
